3rd January 2008

Thusday 3rd January 2008 was the first Club night of the year and the first Club night organised by Pat, Doug, Ben & Tristan. What a night it was!

Given the terrible weather and the time of year, the turn out was fantastic - The place was buzzing! (Quite literally at one point...)

We had 13 sets which gave us 25 songs & poems! We ran over slightly, but we didn't want to cut anyone short when everyone was enjoying themselves so much.

We have no sound clips on the site. Ben did say on the night that if you want a recording of your performance we would gladly put it on to CD for you, but the minidisc recorder didn't want to play the game during the first half. After a quick fiddle at half time, the second half recorded without any problems. It all appears to working fine now. Teething troubles, eh?

Mike Jessop
1. MIKE JESSOP
After a seasonal poem from Doug, club regular Mike Jessop started off the evening and the new year with two Lindisfarne songs "January Man" & "Winter Song". Most appropriate.
2. VINCE CARR

A long overdue return to the club, Vince Carr started his set with Bob Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell". His second tune was an instrumental called "Lovely Joan", A traditional English folk song, no less.

Jim Slaughter
3. JIM SLAUGHTER

We didn't get titles for either of our resident harmonica players tunes and every time Tristan went to take a photograph Jim moved (hence the "arty" photograph here). Jim played his second tune using a £2 harmonica. Just goes to show that music, at any cost, is priceless. (no recording)

4. DAVE DONOHOE
Dave gave us the second Dylan song of the night - "Girl  of  the North Country". His next song was a self penned humorous song about driving his brand new "BMW" . He did admit that he never owned one. (no recording)

5. DEREK, LOUISE, DIANE & ROBIN
Derek, Louise, Diane & Robin were next up to play. They started with "Julie" written by Derek & Louise. They followed that by Doc Watson's "Lay me a Pallet on your Floor" . More of Derek & Louise later and more of Diane & Robin next... (partial recording)
6. DIANE & ROBIN

Diane & Robin gave us Richard Thompson's "Withered & Died" followed by Woody Guthrie's favorite Goebel Reeves song "Hobos Lullaby" .

Okay, so for some unexplained reason I didn't take a photograph of our duo - but if you care to look at the photograph above you'll see them 2nd & 4th from the left... Teething troubles, eh?

7. ALEX OKON
Alex ended the first half with a song made famous by Frank Sinatra - Paul Anka's "My Way". He followed this with "La Golondrina" which was the basis for "She Wears My Ring" performed by Soloman King & Elvis (amongst many others). (no recording)
8. JANE'S ALLEY (DEREK & LOUISE)

To start the second half of the evening Derek & Louise (Jane's Alley) performed the 3rd Dylan song of the evening "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" which was swifty followed by "32 20 Blues" written by Skip James, although most people assume it's a Robert Johnson song.

9. PETER MEEK

Peter took to the stage to give us the Leadbelly classic "Take This Hammer" followed by "My Home Town" by Tom Lehrer. I fine performance from Peter tonight. The meek may inherit the Earth after all...

10. PAT & ALAN

Pat & Alan planned to make sweet music together tonight, but instead they gave us a fantastic unacompanied rendition of "Kathy’s Song" by Simon & Garfunkle.

11. ANNE LUNAM-COWAN
Anne's first poem was about something or other to do with something... what was it again? Ahh yes memory... I think it was called "That Time of Life". She then gave us a Les Barker poem entiled "The Phoenix"... I think...
12. JIM WIGFIELD

Jim started with "North & South" by Christy Moore and followed with the sing along "Wine with Dinner" by Loudon Wainwright III.

13. CHRIS RILEY

Chris first entertained us with "Ordinary Man" by Christy Moore and then, he pulled out an obscure yet beautiful song called "I Had to Tell You" written by Roky Erickson & Clementine Hall and recorded by the Thirteenth Floor Elevators for their 1967 album Easter Everywhere.

So that was the first night of 2008. We know that performers and listeners had a great evening and we'd like to thank everybody for turning up and braving the weather to get here. We hope to see everybody again on 17th January.
